A diagnostic radiologist is a physician who is particularly trained to interpret and obtain medical images. He or she is an imaging specialist, and can diagnose definite illnesses founded on what is observed on computed tomography, radiographs, MRIs, ultrasounds or standard x-rays. Radiologists also treat certain diseases through the use of radiation, nuclear medicine, or image guided surgery. The latter is sometimes called interventional radiology and is minimally all-encompassing.

Similar to other medicinal professionals, a radiologist must graduate from a certified medical learning institution with a degree in medicine. He or she must also pass a state licensing assessment and complete an internship of at least one year. Additionally, a four year residency must be accomplished before he or she is allowed to work separately.
